Volunteers from Foyle Port’s Green Team took to the roads and greenways on Thursday 16th October for a community clean-up along the River Foyle, collecting an impressive 15 bags of litter over the course of 10 miles.
Starting from the Harbour Office at Lisahally and finishing at the old Harbour Office in the city centre, the team spent the day removing rubbish and debris from the shoreline and coastal paths, helping to protect the local environment and preserve the beauty of the river.
The event forms part of Foyle Port’s wider sustainability efforts and was organised by the Head of Engineering, Facilities & Maintenance, David O’Neill. David said, “It was a fantastic effort by everyone involved and keeping our river and coastline clean is something we all take pride in. As employees of the Port, we have a special responsibility to care for the environment that supports our operations and the local community. It was a bonus it was a beautiful autumnal day and the team really enjoyed being outside while doing something good for the environment.”
Foyle Port’s commitment to sustainability is one of their aspirational values and initiatives like this reflect the organisation’s dedication to building for the future. By maintaining a clean and healthy coastline, the Port helps support local wildlife, safeguard marine habitats, and ensure that the River Foyle continues to thrive as a vital natural and economic resource.
Earlier in the year, the Green Team planted 170 trees to mark 170 years of operation. As part of this initiative, cherry blossom and mountain ash trees were donated to local schools, where students joined in the planting effort. Employees were also gifted trees and daffodil bulbs to plant at home, encouraging everyone to play their part in supporting the environment. Foyle Port’s Green Team plan to continue their efforts to make a difference in the months and years to come.
