Foyle Port is a deep water facility that can handle vessels up to 65,000 DWT and a maximum length overall of 215 metres. Situated in the North West of Ireland the Port handles primarily bulk commodities with trade levels in the region of 2 million tonnes annually. A variation of vessel types are handles including bulk carriers, coasters, oil tankers and cruise vessels. The Port provides 24/7 pilotage services and provides flexible working hours on site.

NAVIGATION & PILOTAGE
Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners (LPHC) is the Conservancy Authority and Competent Harbour Authority responsible under primary legislation (The Londonderry Port & Harbour Act 1854) for the operation and management of the Port of Londonderry. Under Section 7 of the Pilotage Act 1987 LPHC is the Pilotage Authority for Lough Foyle and responsible for providing pilotage in the Port and its approaches. LPHC also has the exclusive responsibility for the authorising and providing of pilot boats under Section 6 of the Pilotage Act 1987 and the responsibility for setting pilotage charges under Section 10 of the Pilotage Act 1987.
THE COMPETENT HARBOUR AUTHORITY
By virtue of the Pilotage Act 1987 Londonderry Port & Harbour Commissioners (the Harbour Authority) are the Competent Harbour Authority for Foyle Port. This requires Foyle Port to “keep under consideration” what pilotage services need to be provided to secure the safe navigation of ships in their harbour and its approaches. This involves the following:
Whether pilotage should be compulsory, and if so, for what classes of ships.
The qualifications and number of people to be authorised as pilots within its area of jurisdiction.
The training and regulation of authorised pilots.
The provision of pilot boats to the approved standard.
The granting of “Pilotage Exemption Certificates” to Officers of ships.
The charges to be levied for the provision of Authorised Pilotage Services.
AREA OF JURISDICTION
The area of jurisdiction within which Londonderry Port and Harbour Commissioners have jurisdiction shall be that area within Lough Foyle which extends from Craigavon Bridge at Londonderry to a line drawn from the Tower on Magilligan Point to Greencastle Fort.
Pilotage jurisdiction also includes the following ‘outer area’:
(a) Magilligan Point (Latitude 55°11.60 North, Longitude 006°57.90 West) to position Latitude 55°13.60 North, Longitude 006°51.00 West
(b) Then North to position Latitude 55°15.50 North, Longitude 006°51.00 West
(c) Then West to position Latitude 55°15.50 North, Longitude 006°55.30 West
(d) Then South to position Latitude 55°14.20 North, Longitude 006°55.30 West.
Foyle Port provides an internal pilotage service by highly trained professional Class 1 Pilots authorised to provide safe and efficient pilotage operations to all vessels navigating within the Port. Foyle Pilots are based in Greencastle, Co. Donegal and operate on VHF Channel 14. Pilots board large vessels at the outer pilotage area in the vicinity of the Foyle buoy. Vessels of less than 120metres in length are boarded at Greencastle.
All visiting vessels must contact Harbour Radio on VHF Channel 14.
CARGO & CRANEAGE
Foyle Port handles an extensive range of dry and break bulk cargoes including coal, animal feed, fertiliser, plywood, woodchip, logs, cement, minerals, recycled metal, wind turbines and concrete products. The quality and efficiency of our service and the needs of our customers are of the utmost importance. Foyle Port Operations Team contains highly skilled Port Operatives and Stevedores with vast experience in cargo handling and craneage operations. Furthermore, the Port continually reinvests in facilities to ensure our modern range of plant and infrastructure is maintained. In 2014 the Port invested £1.3million in a new Mantsinen Material Handler which has generated up to 59% increased productivity on discharge rates. More recently in 2019 Foyle Port acquired the largest capacity crane in its history at a cost of over £3million, a new Liebherr LHM 280.
Foyle Port offers an in house stevedoring service as part of our overall cargo handling service. Our stevedores are highly trained and experienced in handling a wide range of cargo types and operate a safe, efficient and high quality stevedoring service. The Port maintains a modern fleet of forklift trucks, skid steer loaders, wheel loaders and excavators for all stevedoring and cargo handling needs. The Port also offers customers available quay side storage and warehousing facilities.

Foyle Port offers a fully integrated cargo handling service which covers bulk transport from the ships hold to shed. Our warehouses, encompassing approximately 783,000 sq ft (c. 73,000 m²), include a number of Tascc approved state-of-the-art bulk sheds and chemical stores. As part of the overall service offering, Foyle Port provides warehousing solutions to meet both the short and long-term needs of Port users. By working with our commercial partners we can agree bespoke storage solutions with the added advantage of close proximity to the quay.
Foyle Port operations are highly accredited with a range of ISO approved certifications covering all quality, health and safety and environmental aspects of our operations.
Foyle Port own a 157 acre (c. 0.64 km²) estate at Lisahally. The estate comprises 22 acres located adjacent to the quay and approximately 105 acres of surrounding Port development land. There are currently 35 acres available for future development on Port lands representing an exciting opportunity for Port related projects with the added benefit of permitted development planning regulations.
